YOUR FIRST CLASS AT THE FORGE: EXACTLY WHAT TO EXPECT

Jan 13, 2026

Nervous about your first class? We get it. Walking into a new gym, not knowing anyone, not knowing what to expect, it's uncomfortable. We've all been there.

Here's a minute-by-minute breakdown of what actually happens when you walk through our door for the first time.

Before you arrive

Wear comfortable workout clothes and athletic shoes. Bring water. Arrive 10-15 minutes early so you have time to meet your coach before class starts. That's it. You don't need to bring anything special or prepare anything in advance.

When you walk in

Someone will greet you. If it's your first time, tell them. Your coach will introduce themselves, learn your name, and ask a few quick questions: any injuries or limitations we should know about, your fitness background, what brought you in. This isn't an interrogation. It's a coach doing their job.

The warm-up (about 10 minutes)

Every class starts with a structured warm-up. This isn't optional stretching while you wait for class to start. It's a coach-led sequence designed to prepare your body for the specific work ahead. You'll raise your heart rate, move your joints through their range of motion, and practice some of the movement patterns you'll use in the workout.

The strength or skill segment (about 15-20 minutes)

Most classes include a focused strength or skill segment before the conditioning piece. This might be barbell work, gymnastics skill practice, or a specific movement pattern. Your coach will demonstrate, explain the scaling options, and help you find the right load or modification for your level.

If you're new, you'll almost certainly be scaling. That's not a consolation prize. It's the correct approach. Scaling means doing the movement in a way that's appropriate for your current ability level. Every athlete in the gym has scaled at some point.

The conditioning piece (about 10-20 minutes)

This is the part people usually think of when they think of a workout. It's typically a timed effort involving multiple movements. Your coach will explain the workout, demonstrate the movements, and tell you what to scale if needed.

You will probably feel like you're going to die. You won't. Pace yourself. Focus on movement quality over speed. Finish.

After the workout

There's a cool-down. There's also usually conversation. People talk. You'll meet some of your classmates. Your coach will check in with you.

The honest truth

Your first class will probably be harder than you expected. You might be sore for a couple of days. You might feel like you were the least fit person in the room.

That's fine. Everyone starts somewhere. The coaches at The Forge have seen every fitness level walk through that door, and their job is to meet you where you are and help you get better.

Come back for your second class. That's where it starts to click.
