FUNCTIONAL FITNESS OVER 40: WHY IT MATTERS MORE THAN YOU THINK
Jan 27, 2026
There's a version of fitness that's about aesthetics. Six-pack abs, a certain number on the scale, fitting into a specific size. That version has its place.
But there's another version of fitness that becomes more important the older you get. It's about what your body can do, not just what it looks like. It's about picking up your kids without throwing out your back. Carrying groceries up the stairs without losing your breath. Getting off the floor without using your hands. Staying active and independent for decades.
That's functional fitness. And after 40, it matters more than most people realize.
What "functional" actually means
Functional fitness trains movement patterns that mirror real life: pushing, pulling, hinging, squatting, carrying, rotating. Unlike machine-based gym training that isolates single muscles, functional training builds strength and coordination across multiple joints and muscle groups working together.
The result is a body that performs better in everyday life, not just in the gym.
What happens after 40 if you don't train
After 40, the body starts losing muscle mass at roughly 1% per year if you're sedentary. This process, called sarcopenia, accelerates with each passing decade. Loss of muscle means loss of strength, slower metabolism, reduced bone density, and higher injury risk.
Mobility and flexibility also decline without consistent training. Joints stiffen. Movement patterns become compensated. Small imbalances that were manageable at 30 become chronic pain at 50.
None of this is inevitable. It's largely a training problem, which means it's largely a training solution.
What functional training does for you after 40
Strength training preserves and builds muscle mass at any age. Studies consistently show that adults in their 50s, 60s, and even 70s can make significant strength gains with consistent training. Cardiovascular conditioning keeps your heart and lungs healthy and supports recovery. Mobility work keeps joints healthy and movement patterns clean.
Coached functional fitness addresses all three in every session.
Why coaching matters more after 40
As we age, movement quality becomes more important. Poor mechanics that a 25-year-old can get away with become injury risks at 45. A good coach watches your movement, catches compensations, and teaches you to move better over time.
At The Forge, every class is coached. That's not a luxury. For athletes over 40, it's a necessity.
If you're over 40 and haven't been training consistently, the best time to start was ten years ago. The second best time is now.
